The region is inhabited since ancient times. In the iron age it was part of the Scythian territories and later, around 2600 years ago, it was settled by ancient Greeks, who had several colonies along the coast of the peninsula. In classical antiquity the name of Crimea was Taurica (Tauris). In the course of history the region saw many changes in ownership. It was part of the Roman Empire and later the Byzantine Empire. It was ruled by the Mongolian 'Golden Horde', and came into possession of the Republic of Genoa (Italy). Since the 15th century, Crimea was part of Ottoman realm. In 1783, the entire Crimea was annexed by the Russian Empire. In all times, Crimea was a trade center with important port cities where trade goods arrived via one part of the Silk Road and from there exported to the Balkans and Europe, one of the more precious goods which was traded until the end of the 18th century were slaves.

In recent times Crimea attracts international attention, because Russian armed forces seized Crimea for "strictly humanitarian reasons".
On Monday 11th March 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree recognizing breakaway Crimea as a "sovereign and independent state", one day after it overwhelmingly approved a referendum to secede from Ukraine.

The map shows Crimea with expressways, main roads and streets, as well as the location of Crimea International Airport (IATA code: SIP) northwest of the city of Simferopol.
