Geneva is the capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva (République et Canton de Genève), a part of the Swiss confederation.

The city is situated in the far southwestern corner of the country at the Rhône River on the southern tip of Lake Geneva.

The city houses the headquarters of international bodies such as the Red Cross, various organizations of the United Nations, and the World Health Organization.

Geneva has a urban population of about 186,000 inhabitants, about 960,000 live in its metropolitan area. Spoken language is French.
