The city is located on the southeastern coast of the island.

Kingston exists since the end of the 17th century, the town gained importance after the 1692 earthquake destroyed nearby Port Royal, which was until then the center of shipping commerce in the Caribbean Sea.

Kingston is surrounded by the Blue Mountains, the longest mountain range in Jamaica. The city and its harbour is also protected by the 'Palisadoes', a narrow peninsula. Situated on the Palisadoes is also Jamaica's principal airport.
The central area of Kingston is its historic Downtown, and New Kingston.
Today the city has a population of nearly 1 million people living in its metropolitan area. The majority of the inhabitants of Kingston is of African descent.

The vast majority of Jamaica's economic activity takes place in Kingston, making it the center of the nations economy and finance. Also almost all national government ministries are located in the city.

Kingston is home to the University of the West Indies, a public university system serving 18 English-speaking countries and territories in the Caribbean.

Spoken languages are English and Jamaican Patois.
