About Ljubljana

Slovenia. The country's largest city is located in the Ljubljana Basin in the center of the nation. The Ljubljanica river, a tributary of the Sava river flows through the city.

The region was inhabited since prehistoric times. At the beginning of the 1st century BC, the Romans built a fortified encampment at the site of today Ljubljana, which was known as Emona, the cantonment had a population of 5,000 to 6,000 people, mostly merchants and craftsmen.

The settlement was located at a major trade route between the northern Adriatic Sea and the Danube region. The Ljubljanica river played an important role as a transport route for the trade between the city and the rest of the region. In the Middle Ages the town was the historical capital of Carniola, then part of Austria-Hungary, and known as Laibach in German.

Today Ljubljana has a population of about 278,000 inhabitants (in 2015). Official language is Slovene.

The city is the educational center of the nation, home to the University of Ljubljana

with its 23 faculties and three academies, and it is home to the National and University Library of Slovenia, the Central Technological Library, the City Library of Ljubljana and other libraries.
