About OrlandoSatellite view showing Orlando, located in Central Florida, about 60 km (37 mi) west of the Atlantic coast, and 200 km (127 mi) south of Jacksonville, it is the core of the Greater Orlando metropolitan area, a major city and one of the country's premier tourist destinations in central Florida, USA. Florida's largest inland city is nicknamed the “City Beautiful" but also known as the 'Theme Park Capital of the World'..The city started as a small town named Jernigan, it was renamed in 1857 to its present-day name, probably after the character in Shakespeare's As You Like It. In 1856 Orlando became the county seat of Orange County, Florida. By the 1920s, Orlando had grown from a cattle town to a major citrus growing center and a popular resort. The city survived the Florida land boom of the 1920s, Florida's first real estate bubble, which burst in 1925. Today Orlando has a city population of 277,000 inhabitants (in 2016), 2.32 million people live in Greater Orlando (Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metro Area, 2014 est.). Beside beeing a major tourist destination, the city is an important industry and hi-tech center, known for innovations in digital media, software design, agricultural technology, aviation, and aerospace. Central Florida Research Park is largest research facility in Florida. Lockheed Martin, an American global aerospace, defense, security and advanced technologies company, maintains a large simulation and training facility in Orlando. Orlando points of interest: Theme Parks: The city is a major tourist magnet, millions of people visit Orlando to enjoy the many attractions in the area, in particular there is Disney World Orlando , with its Magic Kingdom, its Disney's Hollywood Studios, Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, and the space world of Epcot Theme Park are in competition with Universal Orlando Resort, Universal's Islands of Adventure theme park, Wet 'n Wild Orlando, a water park and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter which replaced Merlinwood. Other Orlando attractions are SeaWorld, a marine mammal park and Aquatica, SeaWorld's Waterpark. Orlando Science Center, a private science museum, and for salvation seeker there is even a Christian theme park, the Holy Land Experience. Places: Downtown Orlando (the historic core and central business district of the city), Orange County Convention Center (second largest convention center in the United States), Universal CityWalk (entertainment and retail districts located adjacent to the theme park), Amway Center (sports and entertainment venue), Camping World Stadium (stadium, formerly known as Citrus Bowl) Museums: Orlando Museum of Art - OMºA (collection of Contemporary Art, American Art from the 18th century to 1945, Art of the Ancient Americas and African Art), Cornell Fine Arts Museum (old master paintings, prints, drawings, and photographs), Mennello Museum of American Art (mueum with a permanent collection of paintings by Folk artist Earl Cunningham), Venue 578 (concert and special events venue), Beacham Theater (nightclub and concert venue), Theater: Bob Carr Theater (home to the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra), Opera Orlando (new professional opera company), Mad Cow Theatre (performing arts theater), Sharp Aquos Theatre (performance of Blue Man Group at Universal Orlando) Parks: Lake Eola Park (downtown lake with a dominical farmers market and a Disney Amphitheater), Leu Gardens (park with semi-tropical and tropical plants, a section of the park is a U.S. historic district) Incidents On June 12th 2016 Orlando became the focus of global public attention when 29 year old Omar Mateen stormed the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando and killed 49 people and wounded 58 others.
