About SeoulImage: Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster HQ Seoul has been the capital of the Korean Yi dynasty from the late 14th century until 1910, when Korea was annexed by the Japanese. Extensively developed under Japanese rule, it became the capital of South Korea after the partition of the country in 1945. Seoul has a city population of more than 10 million inhabitants and about 25.6 million people live in its metropolitan area, about half of South Korea's population. Some of Seoul's attractions worth to visit: the Changgyeonggung Palace and the Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bongeunsa temple, Jongmyo Shrine , the oldest and most authentic of the Confucian royal shrines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the National Museum of Korea, and the National Palace Museum of Korea, the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, the COEX Mall convention center, Myeong-dong, one of the primary shopping districts in the city; Lotte World, a theme park and a major recreation complex, and Lotte World Tower, opened to the public on 3 April 2017, it reaches a hight of 555 m (1820 ft), the tower is number 5 in the list of the tallest buildings in the world. Seoul Tower, Seoul's 236 m tall communication and observation tower has a revolving restaurant and offers panoramic views of the city. On Feb. 11, 2008 a fire destroyed the 610-year-old wooden structure atop the Namdaemun gate.
