___ Saint Kitts and Nevis Location map of Saint Kitts and Nevis The newest nations in the Western Hemisphere shares maritime borders with Antigua and Barbuda, Netherlands (Sint Maarten), Venezuela, Montserrat (United Kingdom), and Saint Barthélemy (France). The islands have a combined land area of 261 km², making it the smallest sovereign country in the Americas. The twin-islands are of volcanic origin, high central peaks covered with tropical rainforest dominate the landscape. Highest peak is Mount Liamuiga on St. Kitts at 1,156 m. Saint Kitts and Nevis has a population of 52,000 inhabitants. Capital city is Basseterre, founded in 1627 (not to be confused with Basse-Terre, the administrative capital of Guadeloupe). Spoken languages are English (official) and Creole. |

Background: First settled by the British in 1623. In 1816 St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, and the Virgin Islands formed a single British colony. The islands became an associated state with full internal autonomy in 1967. The island of Anguilla rebelled and was allowed to secede in 1971. Saint Kitts and Nevis achieved independence in 1983. In 1998, a vote in Nevis on a referendum to separate from Saint Kitts fell short of the two-thirds majority needed. Business & EconomySaint Kitts and Nevis' economy is mainly based on tourism. Since the 1970s, offshore banking and tourism have replaced sugar as the propellant for its economy. In 2005 the government closed the sugar industry after several decades of losses.
